Welcome to my website.

I am an author, editor and mixed-media artist inspired by the natural world.

I write creative non-fiction, fiction and poetry, and I am the editor of The Curlew, a magazine of fine writing.

Exploring natural patterns and the effect of light on natural forms, I create artworks using oils, watercolour, pastels, textiles, collage and embroidery, using my training as a photographer and ecologist to inform my work.

I studied fine art and photography at Southend College of Art & Design (now the University of Essex, Southend), then moved to America, living on cattle ranches and documenting the wildlife and landscape of the stunning Rocky Mountains and High Plains in my paintings, photographs and writing. My life as the wife of a working cowboy – along with the history of the Wild West – are documented in my book Cowgirl: A Home on the Wyoming Range, which is now in its second edition.

I have worked as a writer, editor, artist and photographer, editing local and regional newspapers and producing and presenting radio and TV programmes. I have also written and edited books and magazines in the UK and USA, including Horse, Artists & Illustrators, Horizons and The Wild Wood. My writing has been published worldwide, from India to New Zealand, Kenya to the USA.

As a writer, editor and ecologist I have worked for conservation organisations such as English Nature (now Natural England), the Countryside Council for Wales, the Wildlife Trusts, the Woodland Trust, Greenpeace and the British Trust for Ornithology. I have also lectured in ecology, biology and conservation in universities, and conducted poetry and creative writing workshops in schools.

My writing was recently shortlisted for a Literature Wales award.

I have a PhD in River Ecology from the University of Essex, a BSc (Hons) in Ecology from the University of East Anglia, and an MA in Writing Nature & Place from the University of Exeter.

Since 2009 I have been a full-time author and artist and have exhibited around the UK and abroad. I have trained with celebrated international artists, such as Hiroshi Ueta and Ben Dearnley, and at the Royal College of Needlework. My artwork has been exhibited in the UK, USA, Ukraine and Australia, shortlisted for the Royal Academy and the Royal Western Academy, and shown at prestigious events such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

My work is in private collections in the USA, Australia, Monaco, Germany and UK.
